Abstract

On November 22, 2023, the dedicated BBU all-in-one machine jointly developed by China Unicom Ningbo and Zhejiang DTCT Data Technology Co., Ltd. was officially completed and put into use. The R&D project was initiated in 2021 and took more than two years to complete. It marks the further consolidation of China Unicom Ningbo’s emerging computing power base and represents an exploration into the application of low-carbon data centers.

In compliance with relevant technical and management requirements of China Unicom Headquarters and national regulatory authorities, and responding to the 'small yet sophisticated' development needs of communication base station equipment rooms in Ningbo, China Unicom Ningbo and DTCT jointly iterated, developed and built the dedicated BBU all-in-one machine with reference to relevant international and domestic standards and specifications. It aims to standardize the construction of communication base station rooms, improve equipment room management and security protection levels, and ensure the safe and stable operation of communication systems in equipment rooms.

To meet diverse requirements of communication base station rooms, the dedicated BBU all-in-one machine integrates infrastructure including DC power distribution unit, DCDU, rack-mounted precision air conditioner, emergency heat dissipation, passive thermal control system and integrated monitoring & management system.

It provides a safe, stable, enclosed and dust-free operating environment for BBU, optical transceivers and other equipment.
It simplifies the workflow and complexity of base station rooms. One all-in-one unit serves as a complete equipment room, greatly shortening the construction period of base station rooms.
Rigorous laboratory tests, factory commissioning and on-site debugging are implemented to guarantee customer experience at every stage.
Advanced technologies such as stream computing and real-time big data analysis are adopted to boost monitoring efficiency, enhance perception capability and safeguard the operating environment of base stations.

To lift the green performance of data centers, China Unicom Ningbo and DTCT have rolled out a set of comprehensive solutions. First, for piloting cutting-edge industry technologies, the dedicated BBU all-in-one machine adopts an automatic switching design of dual cold sources: air cooling and natural cooling, which reduces cooling coverage and optimizes airflow organization inside cabinets. Second, AI situational awareness is deployed to intelligently analyze and switch cooling modes. It cuts energy consumption by over 50%, shortens construction cycle by 80%, reduces construction cost by more than 40%, and greatly improves the reliability, intelligence and unattended operation capability of communication base station rooms.

The dedicated BBU all-in-one machine not only simplifies the construction and management workflow of communication base station rooms, but also substantially improves the security and stability of communication systems, practically resolving pain points of base stations. Its successful R&D and commissioning delivers a new solution for green and low-carbon equipment rooms and provides references for subsequent equipment room construction and upgrading. It marks a major achievement of in-depth cooperation and active innovation between China Unicom Ningbo and DTCT, as well as a new milestone for efficient, eco-friendly and secure construction in the communications industry.
